Williams we began a march from Shennadoah Valley to Alexandria Va. lasting about forty two days, during which time we marched forty days; following this march I had trouble to march with the Company and Capt. I had during the month of Aug. 1862 a severe attack of campdiorrhea and took medicine to check it which resulted in an attack of piles from which I have suffered ever since. The partial paralysis for which I have suffered contionoiusly <sic> from the time following the long march above spoken of has grown gradually worse ever since, there being no time since I came out of the service, that I have been able to stand walking or being on my feet as before; I am now totally disabled for the performance of manual labor and have been for near fifteen years, almost totally disabled.' In a letter by Sarah Thorla, nee Stevens, written in her latter years, she writes:
'My father, Vernon Stevens was the son of Milo Stevens, who died when father was a boy. His mother married and left my father motherless. His cousins, James and Jeannette Ogle, kept him till he was of age. Ogle's lived near Dudley, (five miles south of Caldwell).'
In an addendum to the letter her son, Silas Thorla states:
'As I understand it, Grandfather, Vernon Stevens, began his married life at Sharon Ohio, which was a much older town than Caldwell, the county seat, three miles distant. he had learned the trade of a tanner, and either built or bought a tannery there. When my mother, Sarah Stevens Thorla was 7 years old Grandfather moved to a farm adjacent to Hiramsburg, Ohio, about six miles distant. Three of the elder children, Ezra, Sarah, and Martha, and perhaps Milo were born at Sharon. Their first three years at Hiramsburg was lived in an old log school house that stood on the tract of land they bought, during which time they built the frame house, in which they lived the rest of their lives. Grandfather was stricken with rupture and died in an operation when only a little past 47 years old. Grandmother kept the farm going for about 20 years, and as I see it now, under rather adverse circumstances -- good, bad and indifferent renters, most of the time the two latter. Their ashes repose in the cemetery at Hoskinsville, Ohio where the little girl, Marilla was buried. They were very devout Christians. Members of Regan's Chapel, adjacent to Hoskinsville, Ohio. They had the finest spring house. Nothing for miles around equaled it. Grandmother's sister, (name not known) married Thomas Stockwell, a marble tombstone maker. He did the stone work, the baths etc. which surpassed anything in the country. Not a vestige of this lovely old home remains, except a few cut blocks of stone. Even the hillside has slipped and encroaches where the dwelling house stood, all barren and desolate. My heart sinks within me when I pass the place. There were eleven children, and as you will perceive, all except one, Marilla, lived to maturity. The older ones, as soon as they were old enough got out and hustled for themselves.'
'Grandfather Stevens' family Vernon Stevens born March 1, 1814 died June 27, 1867. Malinda Caldwell Stevens born May 25, 1816 died May 9, 1888 Children Ezra Stevens born May 15, 1838 died 1917, Wife Harriet Bartlett. Sarah Stevens born Dec. 28, 1839 died 1937 Married Francis W. He was a maker or seller or both of stone-ware goods.' 'Grandfather Stevens evidently had a sister or two. My mother used to speak of Tuttles on her Father's, side. Also she corresponded with relatives by the name of Bruberry or Brubaker. They lived at Thornville, Ohio.'
'I think the Tuttles lived down Duck creek, south of Caldwell, near the Ogle's, where Grandfather grew up.'
According to A History of Noble Co., OH, Vernon did have a tannery in Sharon, OH in 1836. According to the death record Vernon was a farmer, and died of a hernia. He and Malinda were married by W. Parrish.

He appeared on the census of 8 Jun 1880 at Noble Twp., Noble Co., OH. He Wilbur lost his only son in World War I.
She For some reason Sarah went to live with a family named Comb when she was about 10 years of age. She stayed there about 7 years, until she married.
She Melissa was murdered in her store by Elmer Johnson, a drunk she was trying to remove from her store. Elmer pulled out a knife and severed her jugular vein. At his trial it could not be proven that he meant to cut her, so he was found guilty of 2nd degree murder, and given life imprisonment.

9. Malinda4 Caldwell (John, #18) was born on 25 May 1816 at OH; Noble Co., OH Cemetery Inscriptions, Book III.124,125,126,127,128,129 She married Vernon Stevens (see #8), son of Milo Stevens and Sarah (--?--), on 27 Nov 1837 at Sharon, Morgan Co, OH, Marriages in Morgan Co., OH, Vol. A.130 She died on 9 May 1888 at OH at age 72 Noble Co., OH Cemetery Inscriptions, Book III. She was also known as Melinda.131,132,133,134 She appeared on the census of 8 Jun 1880 at Noble Twp., Noble Co., OH.135 After Vernon died, Malinda kept the farm going for another 20 years under rather adverse circumstances -- good, bad, and indifferent renters, most of the time the two latter. In a letter by Sarah Thorla, nee Stevens, written in her latter years, she writes: 'My mothers maiden name was Malinda Caldwell. She was the daughter of John and Anna McKee Caldwell. John Caldwell was the son of Robert Caldwell, one of the earliest pioneer settlers of Duck creek.' As an addendum to the letter her son, Silas Thorla, writes: 'Grandmother was an extra good cook: much of it was done over a wood fire in an old fashion fire place in pots or kettles hung on a crane or baked or roasted in a large cast iron skillet, with legs and flanged cover, or lid, over and under a hot bed of coals, on the hearth.' 'She smoked a pipe and learned me to smoke. She sat by the fireside, filled her pipe, and then gave it to me to fish a hot coal - lay it on the pipe and give it a few draws to get it started and she'd do the rest. But I did not keep it up. When I went back home, Mother and Dad stopped it. I should have said previously, that mother, when she was about 10 years of age went to live with the Comb's family, and remained with them about 7 years, or until she was married. It would be my guess that Clem would be the only one that would have a recollection of Grandmother, and her humble home. I'm the only that remembers seeing Grandfather. He, like many other fathers of a big family, was a little stern - not so kind as Grandmother but altogether, a very highly respected man. We can well be proud of our Grand-parents, on that side of the house.'
10. Henry Dutton4 Bartlett (James, #20) was born on 17 Nov 1818 at WV.136,137 He married Sarah Vance Throckmorton (see #11), daughter of Gabriel Throckmorton and Mary McCabe, in 1841 at OH.138,139,140 He died on 23 Mar 1886 at Washington Co., OH, at age 67.141,142 He was buried after 23 Mar 1886 at Beverly Cemetery, State Route 339, Beverly, Washington Co., OH.143

The fact that Sarah was Vernon's mother is circumstantial, and, at this time, still fairly weak. It is based on information given to me by Kay Barnhouse Stout, of Caldwell, OH, and on Sarah's headstone. Sarah's headstone states that she was the wife of Milo. Her birthdate makes her a good candidate for my Milo's wife. Kay Stout believes she is the mother of her ancestor, Cassandra Stevens, who married Daniel Tuttle. The fact that Vernon Stevens' daughter talked about Tuttle cousins in Dudley, leads me to believe that Sarah was probably Vernon's mother.
18. John5 Caldwell (Robert, #36) was born between 1791 and 1792 at Chester Co., PA.192 He married Anna McKee (see #19), daughter of David McKee and Martha Dunlap, on 23 Feb 1816 at Guernsey Co., OH, IGI, John's last name is listed as Colwell. "The assumption, for such it is, that Gabriel who married and died in Noble Co., Ohio, is 'Gabriel son of Capt. Gabriel' rests on the facts that Gabriel Jr. was living unmarried in Va. in 1810 according to the Census and that Gabriel of Ohio was 'born in Virginia and had at least two brothers named respectively James and Albion, for whom he named his only son. The supposition is that he removed from Va. to Noble Co., Ohio, after 1810 and married there late in life a young wife (name unknown) and died while his children were very young. They were taken into other home to be reared and his widow remarried, dying in March 1870 (Family tradition)."244

He Most of the information that I have of Robert and his decendants, with the exception of his son John's decendants, I owe to my 5th cousin once removed, George Robert Caldwell, who was very generous to share his information with me, Edwin Stamford Hill 2nd. Thank you George. From L. H. Watkins, History of Noble County, Ohio, (Chicago: L. H. Watkins & Co., 1887), p 311: 'The name of Caldwell has been conspicuous in the annals of Duck Creek Valley from the earliest history of that region, to the present day. The progenitor of the Noble County Caldwells was Robert Caldwell, a native of Chester County Pa. He was a man of much natural ability, and of great force of character, those traits being inherited from his Scotch- Irish ancestors. He served as a teamster in the Revolutionary War, married and settled in PA, and in 1795 emigrated to the Northwest Territory, settling in Washington Co., OH, which then had the chief settlements in the territory. He explored this section of the country and by the advice of General Putman, made a selection of the land on which he afterward located. In 1808 he came up the west fork of Duck Creek with his sons and began an improvement on what became the Caldwell farm. He was, therefore, among the earliest pioneers of the valley, and the first to make a clearing where the town of Caldwell now stands. The Caldwell farm was 600 acres in Olive Township. Several of his children were also born in PA.
Children of Robert6 Caldwell and Jane Fulton (see #37) were as follows:

The family were not only among the first in the county in point of settlement, but were also pioneers in almost every important public enterprise ever undertaken in the county. The McKees were of Irish descent, and came to Ohio in the latter part of the last century, from Lycoming County, Pa. The family consisted of David McKee, his wife and several children. They remained a number of years in Washington County, in the vicinity of Marietta, and in 1809 came up the West Fork of Duck Creek, settling on the farm near Caldwell, now owned by Alexander McKee. They were among the very earliest families in the valley, and for several years had but few neighbors and no trading point nearer than Marietta. The father died in 1815, and the widow and her children were left to get along as best they could in the arduous labor of pioneer farming. Mrs. McKee died in 1848. He Robert was the pioneer salt maker at Olive, and was a leading business man in the area for many years. He came with the family to Duck Creek in 1809. He stamped his name on all the prominent events in the early history of what is now Noble county. He was the discoverer and pioneer salt maker of the valley, a business which he continued until the competition of the various salt works on the Muskinghum reduced the price to fifty cents a barrel. While drilling some of the first wells, he obliged to go to Marietta to get his tools repaired. After the salt business became unremunerative he built a log structure in Olive, where for many years he did a successful business as a merchant; his was the first store within the present limits of Noble Co., his nearest competitor being at Barnesville. His first stock of goods was packed in on a horse from Baltimore over the mountains. He was also the first to handle tobacco, in which he engaged quite extensively for many years. He was a man of deep religious conviction and built the first church in the county; in this enterprise he evidenced his accustomed liberality. After deciding to build a church, he deputized a man by the name of Peter Lady to solicit subscriptions. After several weeks Lady reported $45 as the sum collected. McKee, disappointed by the matter, said to him that if he would return the money he would build the church himself, which he did. The date of erection, as near as can now be ascertained, was in 1828. About 1855 he began to feel the weight of advancing years and retired from active business and devoted his attention to his farm, and loaning the accumulations of years. He died of Bright's disease.
