Agnes was named for Agnes Cochran. Agnes attended Hanover College in Hanover, IN. Agnes died at her daughter Edith's house. Her eyesight failed her in the later years of her life.

4. John Calvin3 Kennedy (William, #8) was born on 20 Oct 1843 at IL.11,12,13,14 He married Catharine Cannon Kennedy (see #5), daughter of James Kennedy and Sarah Ann Means, on 30 Oct 1865.15 He died on 6 Jan 1918 at Denver, CO, at age 74.

He appeared on the census of 28 Jul 1870 at Elkton, Washington Co., IL, John's real estate is valued at $5,000 and personal estate at $1,200.16 He was was an Insurance Co. President in 1900 at Denver, Arapahoe Co., CO.17 John went to college in Fayetteville, PA, was in the Civil War in Company G, 13th Illinois Cavalry. He was made lieutenant in 1864, at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. After the war he became an enthusiastic member of the G.A.R.. According to the Denver Public Library, he was a member of Post 46 in Denver CO. (There was also a Post 19 in Denver that disbanded in 1889).

They made their home in Denver, CO at 837 S. 12th St. He was a member and field representative of the Woodmen of the World and for a time was editor of the Pacific Woodman. He was an elder in the United Presbyterian church since 14 Nov 1888. He and his wife are buried in the Fairmont Cemetery, at Denver, CO.

8. William4 Kennedy (James, #16) was born on 1 Aug 1809 at Newton, Limavady County, Londonder, Ireland.52,53,54,55 He married Eleanor Mccall Todd (see #9), daughter of Andrew Todd and Margaret McClean, on 17 Nov 1836. He died on 3 Feb 1880 at Elkton, Washington Co., IL, at age 70.

He was Farmer in 1850 at IL.56 He appeared on the census of 26 Oct 1850 at Dist. #20, Washington Co., IL, The value of William's real esate is listed as $1,500. Also listed are Margaret Patton, 28 from Ireland, William Glenn 17, and James Glenn, 19, both laborers born in PA.57 William died suddenly while seated in his chair at his home in the brick house in Elkton, IL. Both he and his wife Eleanor are buried in the Oakdale, IL, Cemetery. The Kennedy family home had been in the East, but William and his brothers John, James and Hugh, were persuaded by The Nash Real Estate Company, to buy land in the West Illinois. They bought a block of land in Plum Hill and Johannesburg Townships in Washington County, IL. They planned that each would build a house on their corner of land and establish homes. But as time went on, John and James sold their holdings to William and stayed in the East, and Hugh sold his land and bought land near Coulterville, IL. William built his house on his corner of land and there his family was born. The house was a low-built house, with a porch all along the front. The barn was a bank barn and was low and rambling. Family reunions were held at this home. William became one of the first members of the Oakdale Covenanter Church, when the church was situated where the cemetery now is. He was an elder there from 1843-1880, or till death. When living on his farm, he wagoned his farm produce to St. Louis, bringing in return for supplies needed. He hired men to work the farm. One of his workers, James Glenn, was kind and considerate to all. William built a flour mill at Elkton, IL, in 1866. Some of the name brands were, 'Kennedy's Choice,' 'Sucker Mills,' 'Washington Mills,' and 'Southern Star.' This mill burned on 30 Mar 1876. He built a brick house in Elkton in 1867. An entry in his day book states he paid on 15 Aug 1867, $2,000. He also dug there two large cisterns and built a barn. Reared in their home for some tim e were Connly Conn, Bridget O'Leary and Katie Welsh. Of the nine children born to William and Eleanor, 3 died infants, and 2 saw Union Service in the Civil War.

He James and his wife Catharine are buried in the Covenanter Cemetery at Fayetteville, PA, together with many relatives and friends. An iron fence once enclosed the lot but time has changed that. James and his wife stayed in Ireland caring for his parents in the homestead until their death. They came then to America in 1823, some 21 years after his brothers, John and Hugh. They embarked from Londonderry, Ireland, on a 'sloop' to Liverpool, England. There they took a vessel to cross the ocean. It required six weeks in crossing, as steam was not much in use then. On landing they went to Philadelphia, PA, stayed a few weeks, thence by wagon on the highway to Greencastle, PA, locating on a farm four miles from town, which farm was given to them by his brothers, John and Hugh, well-to-do merchants of Hagerstown, MD. Giving them the farm was sort of a reward for their staying in Ireland till the death of their parents. The house on the farm became popularly known as 'Social Hall', and many happy times were enjoyed there. Among old letters found in the attic are many addressed to 'Social Hall', Greencastle, PA. For many years James Kennedy was an elder in the Covenanter Church. All their eight children were born in Ireland, as they came to America in 1823. None took part, of course, in the Revolutionary war. Neither were they Tories. He and Catharine Cannon immigrated in 1823 to near, Greencastle, PA.128

In June 1746, John Shannon was given a commission as Captain and ordered to raise a Company of troops for an expedition against French Canada and their Indian allies. This was during "King George's War". The company was formed and sent to Albany New York hwere it spent the winter. It was finally discharded on 31 October 1747, the attack having been postponed. (Ref: Pennsylvania Archives, Series 1, Volume 1, pp 688-689; & Series 2, Volume 2, pages 419 and 425 & Volume 3, page 496).
