1. Joseph Edwin Stamford1 Hill (John, #2) was born on 26 May 1881 at North St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England.1 He married Sarah Anne Harrison, daughter of Robert Harrison and Emma Anne Hibbert, on 14 Sep 1912 at Fresno, Fresno Co., CA.2 He died on 31 Mar 1950 at 2:00PM, 445 San Pablo Ave., Fresno, Fresno Co., CA, at age 68 Cause of death was listed as Cardiac Failure due to Coronary Artery Disease.3 He was cremated on 4 Apr 1950 at Fresno, Fresno Co., CA.4
He was described as 5' 7" with fair complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes in 1917.5 He was naturalized on 27 Dec 1917 at Fresno, Fresno Co., CA.6 He was House Painter in 1920.7 He appeared on the census of 1920 at 445 San Pablo Ave., Fresno, Fresno Co., CA.8 His Social Security Number was 548-10-3373 in 1950 at Fresno, Fresno Co., CA.9 Joe was a 'stooge' for Sir Malcolm Scott, a female impersonator. He traveled with Sir Malcolm's act to many countries in this capacity. From a postcard we know he traveled from Cape Town, South Africa to South Hampton, England in Sept. 1909 on the "R.M.S. Briton". In Fresno Joe worked as a painter and stagehand for the theater. He had a cabin at Huntington Lake, CA, called 'The Joe Hill Chip Inn', the name being a reminder to everyone to contribute a little something if they were staying.
2. John William2 Hill (Joseph, #4) was born on 19 Aug 1853 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England.10 He married Ann Eliza Womersley, daughter of William Womersley, on 19 Jun 1875 at Parish Church, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, The ceremony was in the presence of William Womersley and William Thackleton.11 He married Alice Ann Casson (see #3), daughter of William Casson and Hannah Child, on 9 May 1878 at Leeds Parish Church, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.12 He died on 13 Apr 1884 at 4 Melbourne St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England, at age 30 John died of chronic jaundice and bronchitis, which he had for 10 months. On the death certificate it says that his father, Joseph, was in attendance. This just means he registered the death, not necessarily that he was at John's side at his death.13
He was Innkeeper. He appeared on the census of 1871 at 4 & 6 Melbourne St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England. He resided in 1881 at North St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England.14 From the 1871 Census and his first marriage license, we know that John was a Carter until at least 1875. By his second marriage in 1878 he had become an Innkeeper. Family tradition says he owned the Stamford Arms, a pub on Stamford Street in Leeds, England. Although he was an Innkeeper, there is no evidence that he actually owned the Stamford Arms. The witnesses at his marriage to Alice were Edwin and Elizabeth Rushworth, and it is Edwin that is shown as the Innkeeper at the Stamford Arms in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses. John was also a bookie (a legal profession at the time), and was recognized by the red apple he always had. He lived on North Street in Leeds.
Children of John William2 Hill and Alice Ann Casson (see #3) were:
3. Alice Ann2 Casson (William, #6) was born on 9 Mar 1854 at 5 Bower's Court, Briggale, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.15 She married John William Hill (see #2), son of Joseph Hill and Jane Lellan, on 9 May 1878 at Leeds Parish Church, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.16 She died on 23 Oct 1943 at 5:45 P.M., Calavers Rest Home, Fresno, Fresno Co., CA, at age 89.17 She was cremated on 26 Oct 1943 at Fresno Crematory, Fresno, Fresno Co., CA.18
She resided in 1878 at Cross Stamford St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England.19 She immigrated in 1911 to Fresno, Fresno Co., CA.20 Alice worked at the Stamford Arms in Leeds, England, where she presumably met her husband John. She told her grandson Edwin that they made the ale in the basement of the Stamford Arms. It is not known if they were also licensed by a brewery, which was the custom of the time. After her first husband died she married a Mr. Childs who she subsequently left. On her birth certificate it says that her mother's maiden name was Child, could she have married a cousin? It also lists her birthplace as 5 Bower's Court Briggale Leeds. She fell down going to the outhouse and cut her leg badly. Gangrene set in and she had to quit working at the Stamford Arms and moved to Southport in Lancashire. On Alice's death Certificate her son Joseph listed her fathers name as John, however from her marriage license we know it is William. He did not know her mothers name. On Joseph's death certificate his daughter, Elsie, listed Alice's maiden name as Alice Ann Child. The Child was evidently another marriage after her husband John William Hill died; since she was listed as a spinster at the time of her marriage to John William. If she did re-marry it may have been a cousin, since her mother's maiden name was Child.
Around May 1943 Alice was moved to the Calaver's Rest Home in Fresno, CA., where she died of congestive heart failure.
When she died her grandson, Edwin, worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, CA and since it was during World War II, he had to borrow gas ration tickets from friends to make the trip to Fresno for her funeral.
4. Joseph3 Hill (Joseph, #8) was born between 1830 and 1831 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England.21,22,23 He married Jane Lellan (see #5), daughter of Richard Lellan, on 27 Nov 1852 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, Joseph and Jane were married in the presence of Michael Gilbert and Mary Lellan.24,25 He died after 13 Apr 1884 at England?.26
He resided in 1853 at 5 Gorner St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England.27 He appeared on the census of 1871 at 4 & 6 Melbourne St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England.28 He was Innkeeper in 1878.29 In the 1871 Census, Joseph, at 50 years old, is listed, at 4 & 6 Melbourne St. in North Leeds, as a Carrier, employing two men. He was born in Leeds and is shown with 4 children. There is a 7 year gap between his sons John William and Alfred, whereas the other children are 3 years apart. This means there was probably at least one more child who may have died, or may be a girl. It was not unusual in England at the time for girls to leave home at 14 to become housekeepers for other families. In the 1881 Census, Joseph, at age 60, is residing at 184 North St. His occupation is Licensed Victualler (an Innkeeper). He is widowed and has two more children. Joseph became an Innkeeper sometime before 1875, since he is listed as a Publican, in John William's first marriage certificate. Joseph was at John William's side when John died.
Children of Joseph3 Hill and Jane Lellan (see #5) all born at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, were as follows:
He was Butcher. He appeared on the census of 1871 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England.
He was Tailor.
5. Jane3 Lellan (Richard, #10) was born between 1832 and 1833 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England.36 She married Joseph Hill (see #4), son of Joseph Hill Sr. and Martha (--?--), on 27 Nov 1852 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, Joseph and Jane were married in the presence of Michael Gilbert and Mary Lellan.37,38
She resided in 1852 at Bombay St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England.39 She (an unknown value).
6. William3 Casson was born circa 1830 at Scotland.40,41 He married Hannah Child (see #7) before 1854 at England?.42,43 He died after 1854 at England?.44
He resided on 9 Mar 1854 at 5 Bower's Court, Briggale, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.45 He was Station Master on 9 May 1878.46
Children of William3 Casson and Hannah Child (see #7) were:
7. Hannah3 Child was born circa 1830 at England.47 She married William Casson (see #6) before 1854 at England?.48,49 She died after 1854 at England?.
Her married name was Haigh.50 On her daughter Alice Ann's birth certificate Hanna is listed as late Haigh, formerly Child. I assume that this means she had a previous marriage to a Mr. Haigh.
8. Joseph4 Hill Sr. was born between 1794 and 1795 at Seacroft, Yorkshire, England.51 He married Martha (--?--) (see #9) before 1831.52 He died after 1861 at England?.53
He appeared on the census of 1861 at 2 & 3 Melbourne St., Leeds, Yorkshire, England.54 He was a Carrier in 1861.55 The evidence that this Joseph, listed as Joseph Senior in the 1861 Census, is the father of John William's father, call him Joseph Jr., is circumstantial. In the Census he is listed as a Carrier, the same profession as Joseph Jr.. in the 1871 Census. Also Joseph Sr. resided at 2 & 3 Melbourne St. in 1861, whereas Joseph Jr.. resided at 4 & 6 Melbourne St. in the 1871 Census. The family of Joseph Sr. was constructed by using the I.G.I. to find all the children christened at St. Peter's, in Leeds, to Joseph and Martha. Among the children is a Joseph who, if christened in infancy, is the right age to be Joseph Jr.
Children of Joseph4 Hill Sr. and Martha (--?--) (see #9) were as follows:
9. Martha4 (--?--) was born between 1797 and 1798 at Celton, Yorkshire, England.56 She married Joseph Hill Sr. (see #8) before 1831.57 She died after 1861 at England?.
10. Richard4 Lellan was born circa 1810 at England?.58 He married an unknown person before 1832 at England?.59 He died after 1832 at England?.60
He was Engineer in 1852.61
Children of Richard4 Lellan and an unknown spouse were:
